Draw what you want to, not what you know

When we draw from imagination, the mind hands us symbols first: an oval for a head, a stick for an arm. The hand draws the sign it already knows instead of what the eye sees, and the drawing you wanted slips away. The two exercises here leave those symbols less room to step in.

Find

A blurred figure has no edges to trace and no features to name. Only gesture, masses and proportion are left. Sketch loose, translucent rough lines over it and let them overlap, then draw only the lines you now see in your own marks. The rough is never erased: a wrong line is still a clue to the next one. A beginner can hardly know a line in advance, so finding it takes practice.

Dots

Draw a line without thinking and you draw a symbol. Before drawing, picture the line with your eyes and place dots where it will go. Plotting a line point by point leaves a habitual symbol no room to jump in.

There is no need to draw well. Spend a few minutes just looking, and train your right brain.
